An ultrasonic level transmitter sends sound pulses to the liquid surface and measures the echo time to calculate level – non-contact, easy to install and economical for water tanks, treatment basins, wells and open channels. Ranges 5 – 70 m, 0.25 – 0.5 % accuracy, 4–20 mA and relay outputs. ISE supplies ultrasonic level transmitters in line with European EN 61326-1 and EN 60529.
How an ultrasonic level transmitter works
The transducer emits an ultrasonic pulse and receives the surface echo: d = c·t/2. The speed of sound varies with air temperature, so the device compensates temperature; there is a dead zone near the transducer. Vapour, foam or heavy dust attenuate the echo – then choose a radar level transmitter.

Choosing the right level technology
Applications
- Clean water tanks, wastewater basins, sumps, wells.
- Open-channel flow (with flumes).
- Non-volatile chemical tanks, dry grain silos (short range).
Installation
- Transducer perpendicular to the surface, away from filling streams and obstacles.
- Maximum level must stay below the dead zone.
- Shade from direct sun to reduce temperature error.
