Why Control TDS in Boilers? Causes, Risks and Solutions

Why control TDS in boilers

What is TDS?

TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) is the total amount of dissolved solids in water, including mineral salts and organic matter, expressed in mg/L (ppm).

Why must TDS be controlled in boilers?

TDS is a key indicator of boiler water quality. When boiler water TDS rises too high it leads to foaming and carryover, scaling and corrosion, blockages, lower boiler efficiency and higher operating and maintenance costs.

How to control TDS in boilers

  • Feedwater treatment: the first and most important step. Treat make-up water (softening, RO, demineralisation) to remove dissolved solids before it enters the boiler.
  • Blowdown control: dissolved solids concentrate as steam is produced, so a controlled amount of boiler water must be blown down and replaced with feedwater. Too little blowdown raises TDS; too much wastes heat, water and chemicals.
  • Automatic TDS controllers: measure boiler water conductivity continuously and open the blowdown valve only when needed – see automatic boiler TDS blowdown control.
  • Chemical treatment: conditioning chemicals control scale and corrosion and keep solids in suspension for removal by blowdown.
