Why Control Excess Oxygen in Boilers? Combustion Efficiency Explained

Excess oxygen control in boilers

Boiler combustion efficiency for oil, coal, gas and biomass boilers

All combustion processes need the correct oxygen-to-fuel ratio because it directly determines boiler efficiency. Too little oxygen results in incomplete combustion and toxic emissions. Running the boiler with a controlled amount of excess oxygen is the usual way to keep emissions low – but too much excess air wastes fuel. SST oxygen sensors help customers optimise combustion efficiency in oil, coal, gas and biomass boilers.

Incorrect combustion wastes fuel, increases harmful emissions and can damage the combustion system – with significant environmental and financial impact.

Fuel and equipment costs in large industrial and commercial boilers and furnaces are high. To achieve a return on investment and minimum operating cost, the boiler must be kept at peak efficiency.

How excess oxygen is controlled

Complete combustion requires an exact fuel–oxygen ratio. This is optimised and maintained by measuring oxygen in the flue gas with an oxygen sensor in a closed-loop feedback system to the burner controller, which adjusts the air–fuel mix. This is especially valuable when fuel quality varies (e.g. gas from different sources, biomass with varying moisture).

Full solution: boiler oxygen trim control – save 2–10 % fuel.
