What Is an Air Knife? Design, Principle and Applications

What is an air knife? An air knife is a hollow metal bar with a narrow slot along its length that produces a thin, uniform, powerful sheet of air – like a blade – to dry water and blow off dust, chips and oil from products on a conveyor. It is fed by a high-pressure blower or compressed air.

Quick facts

Parameter Value
Construction Aluminium or stainless body, plenum, 0.1 – 2 mm slot
Air source Blower (energy-efficient) or compressed air
Length To product width (6″ – 36″ and longer)
Applications Drying bottles, cans, parts; dust removal; air curtains

How an air knife works

Air enters the plenum and exits the slot as a flat sheet. Knives are typically angled 30 – 45° against conveyor travel to strip water and dust.

Blower air knives use 50 – 75 % less energy than compressed-air knives; compressed-air knives are compact for tight spaces. See the air knife drying system.

Applications

  • Drying bottles and cans before labelling and coding.
  • Blowing water, oil and chips off parts after washing.
  • Cleaning dust from conveyors, film and packaging.
